For a while, "The Forest" defies expectations. We're used to the usual scare sequences, in which some eerie music plays on the soundtrack while some character wanders through a spooky locale. The music builds as the inevitable startle moment approaches, and when it arrives, there's the dissonant, deafening sting to accompany the howl/screech/yell of the frightener and whatever terrifying form it takes (monster, masked killer, pale demonic child, etc.).

While there, he forms a friendship with Red (Morgan Freeman), experiences brutality of prison life, adapts, helps the warden, etc., all in 19 years.

'Devi' is A.L. Vijay’s way of saying he can do pei-sa vasool entertainers too.

The ghost is surely the most overused element in current-day Tamil cinema. So much so that it might soon have a fan club. In director Vijay’s Devi, we have a ghost that can actually sign a contract. Yes, that’s what it has come to. Thankfully, that is among the least of the laughable sequences in this Prabhu Deva-Tamannaah starrer. Devi works as an engaging horror film, save for the overdose of dance and frolic that takes away the thrills.

The story is largely based in Mumbai (Devi is being promoted as a trilingual) but things in the first half get going in a village near Coimbatore. We get to know Krishna (Prabhu Deva), who is desperately searching for a ‘modern girl’ (“English grammar lam seriya pesanum”).

The only thing that makes much sense about Rohit Dhawan’s “Dishoom” is its title: the classic Bollywood onomatopoeia employed as the sound effect when an actor throws a punch, or a term used colloquially (“dishoom-dishoom”) to describe an action movie. But the use of this word to encapsulate the film is a questionable decision — sure, blows are delivered, cars get chased by helicopters, and boats explode, but “Dishoom” sputters soon after it starts by way of a promising plot that veers maddeningly off-course.

Because Rahaan (Gaurav Arora) and his pretty wife Shaina (Kriti Kharbanda), and a shadowy blast from her past Aditya (Emraan Hashmi) spend all their time talking thusly: ‘kuch toh raaz hai’, ‘kya raaz hai’, ‘kahin toh raaz chhupa hai’, ‘yeh raaz hamein alag kar dega’, over and anon, till this purported ‘raaz’ starts coming out of our ears, but refuses to come in front of our eyes.
